Dundee bus station - 8am until 6pm
The new route number for the direct bus between Kirkcaldy and Dundee via Leven, Ceres and Cupar is 46.
The 46 doesn't run on Sundays - instead there is a two-hourly 41 between Kirkcaldy and Dundee that misses out Leven.
While we recommend the Stagecoach Bus Journey Planner it often gives you 10 minutes to change buses in St Andrews - but the 99 runs up to every 7 or 8 minutes from 14th August 2023 and goes from Stance 1 right next to Stance 2 where the X58 and X60 usually arrive - so you can often arrive in Dundee earlier than the journey planners tell you. The frequency of the 99 from St Andrews means that even the slower X60 can be a useful backstop for getting to Dundee and in the evenings the only route you might be left with is the very slow 95 round the coast to St Andrews for the 99 and on Friday and Saturday evenings you can use a late night 99 from St Andrews and get to Dundee after midnight if you want. But, St Andrews and the roads around Guardbridge and Leuchars can sometimes suffer from traffic issues, so it's useful that during the day there is an alternative route catching a 44 or occasionally a 43/43A to Glenrothes in time for an X54 to Dundee - though the X54 goes direct to the Bus Station avoiding Dundee Railway Station which might be something to remember if you really wanted to go to the V&A or the Discovery.
In the reverse direction - from Dundee to Leven - again the 46 is best. Travel via St Andrews is the next alternative, but the X58 and X60 can run late due to traffic problems in Edinburgh and they share buses - so if one is suffering delays then the other is probably also delayed. The X54 via Glenrothes provides a slower alternative. There is one journey of a 46 from Dundee that turns into a 41 in Cupar and the same bus continues on towards Kirkcaldy - so the connection in Cupar is guaranteed but won't show up in the journey planner as the planner expects to need 5 minutes to change buses! If you spot that your journey might involve such a renumbering then using the journey planners gets more complicated as you will need to plan the two parts of the journey separately - knowing that you can change instantly from one bus to its newly renumbered continuation...
If you need onward travel in Dundee once you arrive - or if you want the freedom to choose to travel on Moffat & Williamson or Stagecoach services to Dundee then ABC Bus Tickets could be useful - see our Tickets page for more details.
On an evening or Sunday the 46 is replaced by a two-hourly 41 which mostly goes to Kirkcaldy rather than Leven - so you will probably want to change buses at Kennoway or Cameron Bridge railway station to get to and from Leven - time to check the Stagecoach Bus Journey Planner?Â
Also on a Sunday the route via Glenrothes using the X54 and a 43/44 becomes more attractive.
